Don’t do or say things you would not want to see on the evening news.

It is best to assume that everything you or your organization has done, is doing, or does in the future will eventually become public knowledge. This is true whether you are serving in government or in the private sector. It is rare that a month goes by without some knuckleheads being embarrassed, reprimanded, or fired for something they posted on Twitter or Facebook. If you would not be comfortable having a comment shared with millions of people on the nightly news, then for goodness’ sake don’t say it, Tweet it, Skype it, or YouTube it—and, if you can, don’t even think it in the first place.
